Locate your black & white striped shirt and Ray Ban to prepare for Indiestad

About the author
Part-time pop journalist, living within walking distance from Leidseplein, hence ending up at gigs almost every other night. Every musical genre will do, but I have a preference for dark, melancholic, and above all authentic and honest music. If you feel there's a band I should know about, enlighten me by mailing to macha@overdose.am.

“Music gives a city its identity and if one thinks of Amsterdam in musical terms, one should connect it to the indie-state of mind.” That’s what Paradiso must have thought when the idea for creating multi-day indie festival ‘Indiestad‘ was born. An ambitious plan, ’cause right until now the city was known for dancing days in a row during festivals like 5 Days Off and Amsterdam Dance Event. No one would deny the popularity of London Calling though, since almost every edition gets sold out.

The idea came to build upon that solid base, to get to a bigger and megalomanic indie takeover. So put on your black and white striped shirt and take out those Ray Ban’s, ’cause Amsterdam will be Indiestad from the 18th until the 25th of May. Yes, we are intrigued! Now let’s go through our favourites and see what Paradiso, Melkweg, Bitterzoet, De Duif, OT301 and De Balie have to offer during this Indiemania.

For the occasion, we have 2 x 2 tickets for Azari & III to give away! Comment below this post on our Facebook and tell us why you should be there. Full Indiestad programme can be found here.

May 18th: Toro Y Moi @ Bitterzoet

Chazwick Bundick is the face behind chillwave act Toro Y Moi. His star has been rising since the release of his full length Causers of This in 2010. If you care to have a slow dance and experience summer in music, go see the guy at Bitterzoet!

May 20th: Creep @ Bitterzoet Paradiso

Fischerspooner’s tour dj Lauren Flax decided to team up with Lauren Dillard. The outcome is witch house with a dose of UK garage and pop. Since The XX’s Romy lends her voice for the single ‘Day’, it really starts to sound promising.

May 20th: Fresh & Onlys @ Paradiso (London Calling)

Garage pop from San Fran topped with a friendly layer of noise. Play It Strange is a fantastic album and I’m extremely curious about how this will turn out live. Listen to ‘Waterfall’ and get excited for this gig!

May 21st: Twin Shadow @ Paradiso (London Calling)

This talented musician is the brain behind the beautiful album Forget , with a helping hand from Grizzly Bear’s Chris Taylor. Like the recordings? It’s even better live! The new king of indie in my humble opinion.

May 21st: Perfume Genius @ De Duif

Mike Hadreas makes fragile, melancholic songs which are autobiographical. Sometimes a bit disturbing, but most of the time very charming.

May 25th: Explosions in the Sky @ Paradiso

This post-rock band is atmospheric and dreamy: one of the best bands of its genre! An absolute beauty for those who feel no need for lyrics and aren’t in a rush, because the songs are a bit longer than the average three minutes.
