A week ago, Esther Dorhout Mees, an Amsterdam-based designer who we interviewed earlier for our Local Vogue series, gave me a chance to have a little sneak peek in to the making of her new spring/summer 2011 collection lookbook photo shoot. To be honest, this was my first ever experience with doing something like this and I was kind of nervous when I walked in to the location of the photo shoot. It turned out to be quite an experience and I loved it.
About the location itself, I never quite expected it. It was in a really big old warehouse building, which looked like it had been unused for a while. When I asked about the choice of location, Esther told me that she did a surrealistic photo shoot on her previous collection, and wanted to do something different, something more rough this time, which is reflected by the warehouse. See what I saw through my lens:
Once I saw her collection, something caught my eyes. I’m not normally a fan of flowers but it actually looks really good on the clothes she made. She told me she used a flower called “klaproos” in Dutch as her main theme because it has a sort of spring vibe around it. The concept of her spring/summer 2011 collection itself is “truth”. She believes that, as I quote Esther, “We all have individual truth”.
I also like tha fact that she uses a lot of twists in her clothing: most of the clothing is worn twisted around the body. She also uses organic materials as fabric, such as silks. Her new collections is inspired by Scandinavian clothing (she lived in Sweden for quite some time). For more details, I attached some pictures of her new collections below taken by Klaas-Jan Timmerman:
