Museums are here to remind us of our past, show us our future, teach us some culture and entertain us in the meantime. As a kid, I personally did not enjoy the endless walks through the Rijksmuseum to stare at ancient dead blokes. On the other hand, I did very much enjoy museums in which you were allowed to have a little adventure (treasure hunts), create stuff (made myself some sun cream at Nemo) and learn something at the same time. My imagination would go on a rampage at the Tropical museum where I thought myself to be a discoverer in search of new tribes.
The Museum Night of Amsterdam (n8) offers you this kind of adventure. This year 45 museums collaborate and open their doors from 7PM until 2AM and they offer a mighty collection and a kick ass program. Pickiness is advised, because at the doors, full is going to be full. If you go to the website of Museumnacht (Museum Night) they offer you the ability to compose your own programme for the night in advance. From creating your own iPod holder at the Bag Museum to breaking glass at your own Jewish wedding at the Jewish Historical museum, the choice is yours! This is my programme:
1.Artis Zoo
One event you cannot miss is seeing the zoo of Amsterdam at night. Whilst enjoying the sounds of night creatures, a guide will give you a 30-minute tour through the zoo’s finest places.
2. Nemo
Another museum you have to pass by is Nemo from drinking smoking cocktails to making gigantic whirlpools or mixing your own music by moving your limbs. They have a treat for everyone, plus be sure to check out DJ Isis on the turntables!
3. Hortus
If you want to have a mini break for some food and beverages you can try before you die at the Hortus museum. In the Palmenkas they will be serving insect snacks and tea.
4. Tropenmuseum
For a REDelicious night head to the tropical museum. Apparently they will teach you the seducing tricks of Marilyn Monroe and take you on a tour through China. During all this travelling, Subbacultcha offers a musical platform with acts, bands and DJ’s to enjoy.
5. Vlaams Cultuurhuis de Brakke grond
Last but not least our very own Overdose colleague Rutger Houweling is hosting tours at Vlaams Cultuurhuis de Brakke grond. Every half an hour from 19.00 till 23.00 Rutger will take you through the amazing photo-expo of Frederik Heyman.
After seeing all the permanent collections and temporary exhibitions on show the party continues. On this 11th edition you can go and kill your enlightened braincells by having a drink and enjoying live music, DJ’s, dance performances, films and more ath the many afterparties. To decide which cultural afterparty suits your flavour best, have a look at your Next Mondays Hangover.
Have yourself an educational night guys! And keep your ticket, because in the period after Museum night, it allows you free entrance to one of the participating museums. My pleasure!
Sharing is caring!
