While cycling on the Singel one evening, I spotted a cute little door just beneath the Torensluis bridge. It was almost like an Alice in Wonderland scene. Having lived in Amsterdam for a pretty long time, I had never spotted this door before. While thinking this, the little door opened and when someone stepped out some jazzy tunes escaped from the mysterious space underneath the bridge too. After doing some research I discovered that Brug9, as I found out it is called, was once a prison but now organizes various events including bi-monthly live jazz performances.
In my opinion, jazz in Amsterdam is too often focused on the more grey-haired and thus I loved the concept of live jazz for both the younger and elder population. Therefore I attended one of the live jazz performances by the Olaf Zwetsloot Quartet last Thursday. When I walked into Brug9, it felt as if I just entered someone’s intimate cozy cellar while the jazz tunes bounced off the rough brick walls. I could almost smell and feel the history hidden behind every stone in the walls while at the same time a nowadays vibe was swept through the space by the quiet chatter of the mixed audience.
This, literally underground space is THE spot to spend your Thursday night either calmly bobbing your head on some slow jazz melodies or to move your body to some groovy jazz tunes. So where will you spend your next Thursday nights? Exactly, at Brug9’s jazz evenings!
