Sophie’s choice is a series of portraits of young artists I want you to meet and keep an eye on. Why? Because they are inspiring, talented and doing what they like to do most. They are people with a passion for their art, on their way to becoming the greatest artists of today and tomorrow. The new generation is here! Meet more of them here.
Valentijn Bannier, the 23 year old guitar player and front-man of the band Cirque Valentin, knows how to throw a great party. Go to one of his shows and you’ll find yourself in a circus. You’ll meet the world’s strongest man on bass, a mime on drums, a cowboy on keys, and many more animals and circus freaks.
The party starts right away when Valentijn enters the stage, supported by a danceable hip-hop beat played by his band. Dancers and backing vocalists in the background complete the show, and the party continues all the way until the last song, when the crowd goes wild to a true sing-along and Valentijn gets undressed by hot girls climbing the stage.
But all this partying doesn’t affect the quality of the music. The songs are smart, well-written and catchy. You can hear the technical qualities of the band, playing rhythmic and tight, and the 2 vocalists -a marine and a candygirl- always hit the right notes. Valentijn recently ended his 4 year conservatory study at the Amsterdam pop department. After 4 years of technical struggling, he’s finally free to do what he does best with his own band. He is also very successful as a session musician, playing for several great artists, such as Giovanca, Lefties Soul Connection and Zuco 103.
