Less than five minutes. That is how long it took for the Spijkers & Spijkers show to be over. Months of preparation and days and hours of excitement preceded an amazing presentation that left me proud to have been a part of it. To me, nothing beats the rush of adrenaline that comes along with events like this.
Part 3: Where the Wild Roses Grow
That is the title of the spring/summer 2011 collection of Spijkers & Spijkers. When I asked designers Truus en Riet to explain the title, they told me that the collection was inspired by a song written by Nick Cave about a duet between a murderer and his victim. A melancholic love story in which a young man becomes obsessed with Elisa Day’s beauty and decides to kill her to perceive that beauty.
Although this may sound dramatic, I personally love the reference. Beauty is indeed tricky and evanescent and this was visible in all the pieces that came down the runway. The garments truly managed to capture the ravishing youthfulness that can be found in any woman. The designs were elegant and showed the models in sensational, yet delicate ways. When the show was over, I felt proud of the many talented designers that Holland has produced over the past years and I wanted to pretty much have all the clothes in the show.
Of course I can’t end this post without at least giving you guys some juicy stories. For me, one of the craziest parts was when Janice Dickinson almost interrupted my interview with Truus and Riet to congratulate us on meeting her. Thanks, I guess.. Or when the paparazzi jumped all over Amber Rose, who might be Kanye West’s ex girlfriend, but was just there to see the show. These moments made me realize that no matter how amazing a show or collection is, fashion will always be a crazy world that I will never fully comprehend, but will always love.
