No more short shorts, cocktails in the sun or festival fun. No more shirtless men playing footie in the park or skinny-dipping after dark.
Sigh. We can all weep and wallow in misery that summer has come and gone, but I object and protest, for autumn too is a mighty rock season, my friends! For some forensic evidence you should go to the NDSM wharf in Amsterdam North this coming Friday or Saturday. Here you will find the hypnotizing industrial fairytale that goes by the name of Robodock.
After being absent from Amsterdam’s cultural agenda for the last two years, Robodock is back. This time bigger and better and not in the form of a festival, but a theatrical, musical and (literally) exploding open-air event. Robodock tells the story of Stravinsky’s Fenix that breathes her last breath of air. The Fenix lands on Robodock where a gigantic nest is located, and then goes to meet its maker. This over-the-top act is accompanied by a special effects orchestra, sound artists, machine builders, pyrotechnics, robot scientists (yes, robots), flame throwers, upcoming bands and, apparently, various innovative international DJ’s.
Not only do the storyline and appearances grab my short attention span, Robodock’s guests are also invited to help build the Fenix‘s nest by adding messages or artefacts to it. Later at night the nest will be set on fire and all will be gone again. Ashes to ashes and dust to dust. I say a great way to start a new season people!
