In a metropolitan city like Amsterdam you always try to keep your ears open for the right events to attend to in the weekend. And that isn’t always easy, because there are so many of them here. Well, from now on I will make things easier for you by weekly suggesting events where you can meet, dance and drink with the best Amsterdam has to offer. After all, ‘a hangover ain’t worth the pain if the party is lame’. So here’s where you weekend warriors should go to for next monday’s hangover.

Viral Radio Festival (cause dubstep ain’t dead yet).
The Viral Radio network has been a frontrunner at programming and bringing together innovative electronic music for years. This year they were part of both North Sea Jazz and Lowlands. Coming weekend it is time for their own festival, in two different locations.

On Friday: Gonjasufi and The Gaslamp Killer will be the headliners of the club night at Trouw. Be sure to visit the other dancehall ‘de verdieping’ in Trouw as well, where Lockdown will be pumping their dub sounds through the speakers.

On Saturday: At the Bimhuis this time, the focus will be on artists like Ras G and Darkstar that are moving towards improvised music.

But wait… There’s more!

Winston Kingdom’s 25th anniversary!
My second recommendation would be the 15th anniversary fest of the legendary Winston Kingdom, Amsterdam’s favorite backpacker hostel/club. Exactly 15 years ago they decided to transform their hotelbar into a proper club, and so they decided to celebrate with a weekend of bands, DJ’s and numerous organizations that became ‘big’ over the years.

On Friday: The Upsessions (a cheerful reggae/ska formation) will be headlining the anniversary fest followed by De Grote Vinnie, Donnie & Sjakie Show (a party squad known for their a capella remixes of Crookers, Diplo, Flamman & Abraxis and their hit song ‘De Koffee Was Up‘) and a few more of these out-of-the-ordinary artists.

On Saturday: international ‘sleaze-duo’ ZZZ will headline the stage (Jon Spencer Blues Explosion meets Suicide meets The Doors) together with the current Belgian rock sensation The Hickey Underworld. Check out a full listing of the artists here. See you there folks!
