About the author
Hi, I'm Sophia, a fiery redhead in the wondrous world of Amsterdam. I find my joy in singing, good food, cocktails, cute hidden places in our city and talking to crazy, inspiring and creative people.

Sophie’s choice is a series of portraits of young artists I want you to meet and keep an eye on. Why? Because they are inspiring, talented and doing what they like to do most. They are people with a passion for their art, on their way to becoming the greatest artists of today and tomorrow. The new generation is here! Meet more of them here.

Kirsten Popkema is a young woman from Amsterdam, and she is ready to take on the fashion world and become a great fashion designer. What I think makes her stand out are her crazy sources of inspiration, and the way she makes them fashionable. Her work starts at a concept, a very abstract idea, that she then turns into wearable and desirable clothes. For example, have a look at her hairy underwear collection, called ‘Je veux ces cheveux‘ (I want that hair): sexy, beautiful underwear made with hair, inspired by -who else- Bob Ross and his intriguing hairdo.

Her graduation collection, called Full Frontal Frivolity, shows a different perspective on the Dutch motto ‘Make a virtue out of a necessity’, a saying about the Dutch economic way of thinking. The collection is visually inspired by the Andrews Sisters, who in the ’40s were a symbol of optimism for the American soldiers. Instead of the sober, heavy clothes I expected, I saw a beautiful, optimistic collection of fine material, beautiful strong lines and feminine ruffles. Clothes in red, white, blue and gold to emphasize pride and patriotism, instead of emphasizing poverty and scarcity.

Be sure to check out her other work at her website. We definitely have to keep an eye on this one. With her surprising collections and her talent, the whole fashion world is ready to get to know her!
