“Have you always been curious to see who the person is behind the graffiti tag?”, Melissa Scholten asks in the opening line of her exposition invitation. I can only answer that question with a loud “yes! yes! please show me!”. Just like Melissa, who can’t help herself from asking “who it is that takes the time to climb over fences close to trains, trams, subways, rooftops or any other high profile spots”, I’ve always had a thing for the mysterious adventures of graffiti artists. It started when I was in London as a kid. I bought a small Banksy replica, and it still has a place in my room today.
Melissa Scholten has portrayed 120 of these people for her book and exhibition called ‘Alter Ego’, and these artists are not the least. Every single one of them has a high status in the Dutch graffiti scene and has at one point left their mark on the streets of Amsterdam. Some quit a long time ago to pursue different careers, some of them made their hobby their job, and others are still jumping fences on a weekly basis. The portraits were shot at locations picked by the graffiti artists as meaningful to them, and are all in black and white. These artists have inspired a lot of people, and ‘Alter Ego’ aims to document and give a face to this subculture that represents life in a big dynamic city like Amsterdam.
