Last week I announced one of my all-time favorite DJs was making an appearance in Amsterdam’s infamous techno-club Studio 80 on Friday. Obviously I was present, so was my fellow writer/camera man Mark; we had a beer, raised our fists, made friends, and waited for hit song Gemini to kick in at around 3 am to summarize the night. I was glad to see so many familiar faces and open my critical ears for some of the finest Dutch techno talent out there before moving on to headliner Marek Hemmann‘s set.
I was pleasantly amused by Arjuna Schiks & Olivier Weiter’s positive groves in the back room and Unders‘ percussion-based performance in the main area. Although minimal techno can be a bit redundant at times, I was happy to be pending for Hemmann’s performance at 2 am due to his more experimental approach towards (minimal) techno.
When he finally hit the tables I must say I expected a wee bit more playful & uplifting samples, nevertheless his bass sound was deeper than the DJs performing before him and the crowd was ultimately enjoying the sound of it. Specially during the last quarter of his set, when his hit songs Gemini and Left kicked in.
Unders’ did a great follow-up and was given the love he deserved for his birthday set. I hadn’t enjoyed myself in Studio 80 for a while like I did last Friday. Check out and spot yourself in our photo report to prove the love for the family was in the house. Cheers!
