Local Vogue is a series of meetings with emerging local fashion talents. These are people who decided to take a leap of faith, live the dream and start their own label. They design, create and show us that when you really want something, nothing is impossible. Previous Local Vogues can be found here.
It must be an amazing feeling to be able to design and produce a piece of clothing or accessory that you really want, but can’t find in regular stores. This is exactly the reason why I want you to meet Depster in the opening article of my Local Vogue series. Even though freedom comes in all shapes and sizes, for Margriet Deppe the best form of freedom is having a small company and being able to design her own handbags. She is involved in every single step of making a bag, and takes the time to listen to the wishes and suggestions of her customers. At the same time, she stays true to her own vision and is a big fan of originality; she rarely produces more than 25 bags in the same style. To give you an idea of the craftsmanship that is in these bags: one bag can take Margriet up to 12 hours of work to make absolutely perfect.
After feeling trapped in corporate life and 9 to 5 schedules, Margriet decided to take matters in her own hands and start her own company. She is now well on her way of becoming one of the most successful authentic Dutch bag designers and her schedule for this summer is packed with collaborations with big brands, such as Scotch and Soda . Her credo is to celebrate style and it was very inspirational to meet her in her own little studio, where she passionately showed me dozens of different types of leather and bags that all had their own story. I got sucked into her tales of old Amsterdam, her books about this city and the way the inspirational people living here gave her courage to finally take the big step and do what she does best: design.
Check out the interview I had with Margriet in the video above and take a look through the photo gallery to see her work and her recent collection.
I will present you more local talents in the next weeks, so stay tuned!
