A while ago, Rob and I told you about the Fashion and Architecture exposition at Arcam; a presentation of what can happen when you mix fashion designers with architects. Ever since the interview we did with organizers Tomas and Wouter, I had been anxious to see the final creations of the participating teams. The opening of the exhibition was on July 16th and I was ready to see what the designers and architectures had come up with in terms of their loosely defined mission of creating a wearable building.
They did not disappoint. The designs were even better than I had expected and Amsterdam as a city was everywhere. These creations are a true lust for the eye and you don’t have to be crazy about fashion to appreciate the beauty of it all. This combination is a perfect example of two fields of work coming together and creating something breathtakingly new. At the end of this post, you can get a sneak peak of the exposition through my pictures!
Iris van Herpen
You can also imagine my excitement when I had the honour of speaking with the one and only Iris van Herpen, who is part of one of the four participating duos, and who happens to be my idol in Dutch fashion. I can shamelessly say that I worship her, because she is young, authentic and a genius in blending fashion and art together, and op top of that, is super friendly and even posed for my camera.
I asked her where the inspiration came from for her wearable building, and she told me that the city of Amsterdam and the Stedelijk Museum had a lot to do with it. Iris was inspired by our (often) rainy city and wanted to design a wearable building based on water and a bathtub. To make this design possible, she created new material herself. This mixture of plastic and glass make her design look like a flowing Amsterdam canal.
While I was face to face with Iris, I took the chance to ask her about her further plans for the summer. She told me that she will be expanding her Amsterdam fashion week collection to London and that she will be showing in New York and Paris this fall. And although she is crazy busy, she tells me that a collaboration like the one she did now with architects is a good way for her to get inspired and think about new and better designs for the future.
Intrigued? Curious? The expo is now open to the public and you still have until September 11th to go and check it out. If my writing is not enough to convince you, maybe these pictures of the opening night will speak for themselves.
