A while ago, Rob and I told you about the Fashion and Architecture exposition at Arcam; a presentation of what can happen when you mix fashion designers with architects. Ever since the interview we did with organizers Tomas and Wouter, I had been anxious to see the final creations of the participating teams. The opening of the exhibition was on July 16th and I was ready to see what the designers and architectures had come up with in terms of their loosely defined mission of creating a wearable building. If people fall, they get a scar. If you would look at a city as a person, its buildings would be its scars. But a city can't fall down, so how would it get its scars? Probably because the architecture 'failed'. It's reminiscent of a time we're not particularly proud of (the Reichsbank in Berlin for instance) or it doesn't fulfil its original purpose any more (like EUR in Rome). Can architecture be said to fail? This, and more questions, will be answered in Failed Architecture: the new series of discussion at De Verdieping. (..more)

Ever seen a Wearable building?

Rob is 27 (but needs his beard to actually look like it), loves music, adventures and spontaneous people. His scribblings are about these things too, so if you share his interests, stay tuned!

One of the reasons I love Amsterdam is the buildings. Whenever I cycle through the streets of my city I keep looking up in awe. Although this hasn’t made me best friends with the local taxi drivers, it has made me gain a lot of respect for both modern and old architecture. So when my friend Wouter, architect by occupation, told me about an exhibition he is organising together with Tomas from Ontfront and Arcam where they are experimenting with a mix of fashion and architecture I knew it was going to be awesome!

Wouter and Tomas told me about their plan: 4 teams consisting of fashion designers and architects were given a simple mission, “design a wearable building”. The only limitation that was given was a practical one, it has to fit in a designated area at the exhibition. Check out the video to see the interview me and Anna did with them above (in Dutch, apologies to non-Dutch speakers).
