Last Saturday, VOLTT Loves Summer's 5th edition took place on the NDSM docklands. Named by Resident Advisor as one of the top 10 August festivals of the world, local host Bart Skills can be proud of his baby. Among others, Ricardo Villalobos, Len Faki and Adam Beyer played some good and deep techno, house and minimal. The weather kept up its promise to me and I was even forced to buy some new sunglasses. For those of you who couldn't go or dumped their tickets in fear of the forecast rain, below are 12 pictures that document the day. (..more)
I’ve been busy, you’ve been busy, sometimes things come later than expected. The book launch of Ernst-Jan Pfauth’s ‘Sex, Blogs & Rock ‘n Roll’ was a real blast, as was the party Overdose threw afterwards. Here are the photos for you to relive the night if you were part of it, or to wallow in self-pity if you weren’t. (..more)
Every time I see a photo taken by Erwin Olaf, I keep staring at it and can only think: “Damn, this piece of art is just…brilliant”. 60 seconds of not blinking later my eyes usually get very dry, but I still find myself unable to turn my eyes away! Recently, I found out about his photo collection DUSK&DAWN in the Hermitage Amsterdam, even though it has been there since June 11th. The exhibition comprises 12 art works and two short movies and can be viewed until September 12th, so there is still some time left to check them out. (..more)
In a metropolitan city like Amsterdam you always try to keep your ears open for the right events to attend to in the weekend. And that isn’t always easy, because there are so many of them here. Well, from now on I will make things easier for you by weekly suggesting events where you can meet, dance and drink with the best Amsterdam has to offer. After all, ‘a hangover ain’t worth the pain if the party is lame’. Ready for the weekend? Here’s some suggestions for getting next Mondays hangover. (..more)
Looking at my schedule makes me realize that the summer is officially over. The days are becoming shorter, it’s getting colder and everyone is rushing again. I don’t know about you, but personally I don’t feel ready for that all yet. That’s why I decided to make a compilation of summer photos Yoga and I took the past weeks. The sight of these creative people standing in the sun makes me forget about fall that is just around the corner and I hope that will be the case with you too when you see them! Enjoy! (..more)
A few months ago I ran into Vesper and instantly fell in love with its relaxed but intimate ‘look and feel’. A small place decorated in a ‘modern but classic’ way. An all together cosy spot. The back bar was packed with all sorts of exclusive spirits, which made me feel like a little kid in a candy store. As I became a regular I noticed that Vesper is perfect for a romantic date, a good chat with an old friend or to work your magic while networking. (..more)
Sometimes, an idea can be so brilliant yet so amazingly simple that it is surprising that no one came up with it before. When I first met Alexander Tempel at Amsterdam Fashion Week, I just had to take his picture. Not because his look was so particularly unique or ground breaking, but because his presence as a whole made me turn my head. He wore his outfit with much confidence, but it was the text printed on the bag he was carrying that provided the finishing touch: Artists not Armies. (..more)
South Carolina based indie rock band Band of Horses, who recently played at Lowlands festival, are coming back to Amsterdam for a show in Paradiso. The sound of their 2010 album Infinite Arms, indie rock with southern United States influences, is very soothing and has been a big part of my soundtrack of the summer of 2010. It’s the kind of music you listen to while driving to Berlin without stops, or when drinking red wine by a camp-fire with good friends. So, everyone who knows how to enjoy music by emotional bearded men with cowboy hats, be there! (..more)
As a kid I LOVED playing Memory, the game where you have to flip and find matching cards. Remember that? I haven’t played memory in a very, very long time, but that’s about to change! Streetlab Amsterdam is combining my old love (memory game) with my new love (photography) and is organizing a ‘Streetstyle Memory Game’. (..more)
Happiness can be found in the little things life has to offer. Waking up to feel the sun shining; enjoying a freshly made coffee in the morning and cupcakes are amongst the things that often put a smile on my face. That and the opening of the first Monki store in Amsterdam, which I told you about earlier this month! (..more)
